ZEV mandate expected to make ICE vehicles harder to buy

Written by Scott Hamilton-Cooper

More than eight out of 10 people (84%) think the 2030 ban on the sale of new petrol and diesel vehicles will make used ICE cars more difficult to buy.

Surveyed as part of Startline’s October Used Car Tracker, 73% of drivers also expect used ICE vehicles to become more expensive, with 58% believing that used EVs will subsequently become cheaper than their petrol and diesel counterparts.

With the full effect of the ZEV mandate likely to be brought forward to 2030, an increasing number of drivers are considering the switch to electric. According to the survey, 64% of motorists are now more likely to purchase either a hybrid or fully electric car in response to the deadline, while less than half (48%) will stick with a petrol or diesel vehicle up until 2030.

With the upcoming ban on the sale of new petrol and diesel cars beginning to influence the overall vehicle market, incentives to encourage drivers to switch will help to speed up the process.

EValuate, Motor Assist’s latest initiative to help UK drivers to transition to electric vehicles, gives ICE car drivers in need of a replacement vehicle following an incident the opportunity to choose an EV replacement car.

Providing motorists with the opportunity to test an EV for an extended period, it will help drivers to understand whether an electric vehicle is feasible for them in the real-world. Should they make the switch, Motor Assist is capable of handling any incident for either ICE or electric vehicles, enabling drivers to get back on the road as quickly as possible.
